What Is PPI?

PPI stands for payment protection insurance which was sold with loans, credit cards, mortgages, car finance, overdrafts,  and other types of credit too, like store cards and catalogue accounts. PPI was designed to cover loan, credit card and other finance repayments in the event of being unable to work due to sickness, an accident, and in some cases unemployment. Most PPI was sold between 1990 and 2010, and as far back as the 1980’s. PPI was paid for in a few different ways depending on what it was sold with. Credit card PPI policies were paid for by monthly premiums, while mortgage and loan PPI was mostly paid for by monthly premiums, with the exception that on some loans the whole cost of the PPI premium was added upfront to the amount borrowed and the borrower would then pay it off over the term of the loan paying interest on the premium, just like on the rest of the loan. This type of loan PPI with the premium added upfront to the loan is known as “Single Premium PPI” and was banned from being sold in 2009 after being investigated by the FSA who regulated such products at that time. After investigating the product it has been found by the FSA and FCA who have now taken over regulation from the FSA that PPI was often mis-sold. More than £29bn has already been paid back to people who have already complained about the sale of PPI.

How Was PPI Miss-sold?

PPI has unfortunately been widely mis-sold by the companies that sold it to their customers and this was mainly as a result of the PPI Company/lender not following the right steps when PPI was sold. When PPI is sold the seller of the PPI who is most often the lender has a legal obligation and a duty of care to ensure that the PPI policy they are selling is in fact suitable or required by the person who they are selling it to. All too often people were being told the wrong things when purchasing PPI. A few examples of situations where PPI may have been mis-sold are:


  • You were told that PPI was compulsory in order to be granted the finance such as a Loan, mortgage, credit card, overdraft, car finance, catalogue, or store card that you were applying for or taking out.
  • You felt pressured into taking PPI out.
  • It was not made clear to you that you were taking out PPI and you didn’t actually want or require it.
  • You were advised that you would get a better deal if PPI was added.
  • You didn’t agree to take out PPI, but it was sold to you anyway.
  • The company did not check that you were eligible for the PPI.
  • If the company didn’t explain the PPI policy.

How Do I Know If I was Miss-sold PPI?

To find out if you have been mis-sold PPI you will first either need to provide proof of PPI or you will need to check if PPI has been sold or added on to any of the finances that you have previously taken out such as Loans, mortgages, credit cards, overdrafts, car finance, catalogues, or store cards. The main grounds for a mis-sold PPI complaint are to do with what you were advised/not advised at the point of the sale of the PPI or when the PPI was added. Quite often we find that PPI was added without the client’s consent or that the client was told that the PPI was compulsory. Although both of these reasons are good grounds for complaint there are many other reasons as to why PPI may have been mis-sold. Such factors as your employment status, financial situation, pre-existing medical conditions, and overall eligibility at the time should have been taken in to account by the seller of the PPI. How Do I Know If I Paid PPI?

You can check if you have taken out or paid for PPI by checking any paperwork you may still have such as statements, terms and conditions or the original credit agreement. Understandably due to the amount of time that has passed since they took out their finances most people do not have any documentation or proof of PPI to rely upon. If you do not have any documentation or proof of PPI then the other options available are to check with the company you got the loan or credit from, or to check your credit report to see if any of the finances that you have had may still be listed on your credit file (finances are normally only listed on your credit report for a maximum of 6 years from the date that the finance account was closed). How Do I Make A PPI Cliam?

Once you have proof that you have paid PPI and you feel that you have been mis-sold the PPI then the most straightforward way to complain about mis-sold PPI is to the company or lender that sold you the PPI. You will need to provide the company or lender with the details of the PPI that you are complaining about and let them know the details of your complaint such as why you think that the PPI was mis-sold and how you want them to put things right. There are many people who would like to complain about mis-sold PPI but they find that they never get around to doing it or they are afraid that it may damage their relationship with the lender. Both of these reasons are not reasons that should prevent anyone from claiming for mis-sold PPI. Simply complaining about mis-sold PPI to your lender or PPI provider will not result in damaging your relationship with them as all lenders and PPI providers have a duty of care to deal with any PPI complaints that they receive in a proper and fair way. We actually receive a high percentage of our PPI enquiries from people who have wanted to either check for PPI or claim for PPI but have never actually got around to doing it.  

Who Sold PPI?

Some of the most popular banks that mis-sold PPI are listed on this page. However this is not an extensive list of all of the banks and providers who mis-sold PPI. If you visit the lenders page on our website we have provided a list of lenders and the brands that the lenders have owned and used that mis-sold PPI or may have mis-sold PPI. It was not just the banks and lenders that mis-sold PPI to their customers, as many banks and lenders used brokers to introduce customers to them and to set up credit agreements for loans, mortgages and credit cards etc. The brokers received commissions for their services and this quite often lead to the mis-selling of PPI by the brokers due to the commissions that they could earn from selling PPI.

How Far Back Can You Claim PPI?

PPI policies have been sold alongside mortgages, loans, credit cards, store cards, catalogues, and in some instances overdrafts as far back as the 1980’s. What Is A Free PPI Check?

A Free PPI Check is basically a PPI check that is carried out on your behalf for free to try to establish if PPI may have been added at any time to all of the finances that you have taken out that you would like to check for any PPI on. What Information Do You Need To Find Out If I Have Paid PPI?

The information required to find out if you have had or have paid any PPI will determine upon your circumstances. However we can normally check for PPI by using just your current contact details along with any name changes or change of address that may be applicable to you since you took out or paid off your finances with your lenders.  Many people incorrectly think or have been given the impression that in order to check for PPI you will need the details of your old account numbers, credit agreements, or statements etc. This information is not correct and we would be happy to assist you to check for any PPI.

What Is The PPI Claim Deadline?

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) who regulates the financial services industry in the UK, including banks and other providers have now  set a deadline date of 29 August 2019 to complain about PPI. This means that anyone who is wishing to make a claim for mis-sold PPI will need to ensure that they have complained to the lender, bank, or PPI provider by 29 August 2019 and the complaint must be received by the firm you’re complaining to on or before 29 August 2019 or run the risk of not having the PPI complaint considered.

No. We can get all of the information we need for the claim from the lender.

My Loan Has Been Paid Off, Can I Still Claim?

Yes, you can claim back PPI even if you have already paid off the loan or you have cancelled the policy.

Can I claim if I am in debt or bankrupt?

You can but if you owe the provider money now or from a past debt they may choose to use the money to pay off the debt.

How much do you charge for this service?

We charge a flat fee of 20% (plus VAT) of any cash amount we obtain on your behalf. There are no upfront fees to pay and nothing to pay if the claim is unsuccessful for whatever reason.

Can I make more than one claim?

Yes….some people make several claims as they have had several Loans and Credit Cards in the last 10 years that included PPI cover.

How long will my PPI claim take?

This depends on the initial response from the lender and the complexity of the case. Many cases can be settled within 8-10 weeks although sometimes it may take longer than this.
