About Woolwich Building Society

The Woolwich Building Society which was initially called The Woolwich Equitable Building Society was one of the largest building societies in the was one of the largest building societies in the UK.

In 1997 The Woolwich Building Society demutualised its status as a building society to be a bank, and was acquired by the Barclays Banking Group of companies in 2000.

As part of the demutualisation in 1997 The Woolwich Building Society was renamed to Woolwich PLC. When Barclays took over Woolwich PLC in 2000 they retained the name of Woolwich PLC and the customers from the Woolwich PLC accounts were eventually migrated over to Barclays mortgage accounts during the first half of 2007 and were still branded as Woolwich accounts. Barclays discontinued the Woolwich brand in 2015 at which point they gradually began to close down the Woolwich brand.

Following the Supreme Court ruling the FCA set out guidelines on how banks should investigate and correct PPI commission and has defined high commission as being anything more than 50% of the cost of the PPI premium.
